Betty Boop Cookie Jars

A Betty Boop cookie jar is a must have for nostalgic collectors.   She started out as a very attractive dog character was paired with a second dog, Bimbo. For a canine – she had some pretty impressive papers. Her style of music came from the Boop-Boop-a-Doop girl Helen Kane and figure was modeled after May West! It was 1930 and this siren became a hit, slowly losing any hint of ever being dog (her ears became earrings!). All in all Betty appeared in over 100 cartoons.

As with any such popular character a wide variety of Betty Boop merchandise has come into the market, some of it being highly collectible. There were quite a few cookie jars made from this character’s changing styles and cartoon appearances.

Here are a few of the most popular and collectible Betty Boop Cookie Jars:
Betty Boop Biker Jar: This is adorable. Made in 2000 by Clay Art in San Francisco, this piece is about 14” high. It features Betty sitting side-saddle on a red bike (emblazed with a B) in a black motorcycle jacket and boots. Current value about $75.

Betty Boop by Benjamin and Medwin, Inc. This black and white Betty Boop cookie jar from 1999 has a great sexy pose and a very classic look with her leaning on the back of the square container. It’s about 10” tall and values at about $50.00 or less.

“Tropical” – This 1985 version of Betty gives a nod to Carmen Miranda, complete with a fruit laden headdress, a large hoop skirt and vivid red shoes. The 12” jar uses a staircase to show off a bit of leg. If you can find one, you can sometimes get them for as little as $70.

Betty Boop on Singing Stove Jar by Vandor:  This is a Betty jar from 2003 that speaks and sings when it’s opened. She says "Hi Sweetie - I want to be loved by you boop boop de boop kiss". It requires a battery and measures 8” wide by 11” tall. Priced currently just over $100.00

Betty Boop as Juliette: For the romantic side of Betty try this 14” tall jar that is very collectible. It shows betty in a window looking for her beloved.   The front of the jar says "Romeo & Betty".  Made by Star Jars, which has been discontinued and priced around $200.00

Taxi!  This Betty Boop jar was limited to 2400 firings by Vandor, a well-known name in cookie jars. She’s featured just sitting down in the classic yellow taxi with the help of a cabbie. Approximate value $100.

Betty & Pudgy Skyscraper: This is a wonderful cookie jar made in 1998, licensed by King Features Syndicate. It’s 12 inches tall and features Betty and Pudgy on opposite sides of a NYC style skyscraper. Approximate value $100.

Cleobooptra features Betty as Cleopatra in this 1997 Betty Boop Cookie Jar.  Only 1000 were made by Star Jars.  It it hard to find and when found usually has a price tag of around $300.

This is only a very small sampling of all the wonderful Betty Boop cookie jars you can find. As always go to trustworthy vendors and watch for pieces with original packaging and no cracks for the greatest investment value.
